Ithaca Bakery Hosts Roller Derby and Meals on Wheels for Derby Day
November 6, 2010, was Derby Day in Ithaca, New York, and Foodnet Meals on Wheels was beneficiary of the community’s energy and generosity. A local merchant, Ithaca Bakery, enlisted members of the Ithaca League of Women Rollers to grab the public’s attention. They served samples of local cuisine and gave away roller derby souvenirs to passersby. Representatives of Foodnet Meals on Wheels, like MOWAA Member Steve Griffin (pictured here), were also on hand during the fundraiser to answer questions and share information about the services they provide seniors in the community. An opportunity to raise public awareness was not all Foodnet received. Ithaca Bakery donated $1 to Meals on Wheels for every $10 of local food products purchased during Derby Day.
“We’ve been excited to have a chance to support Ithaca’s growing enthusiasm for roller derby,†Ithaca Bakery co-owner Ramsey Brous said. “It’s a refreshing, energetic, positive activity that reaches many people in the community. Likewise, we’re happy to connect with Meals on Wheels and put our customers in touch with that organization. It’s a chance to do some good while having fun.â€
