The Ithaca League of Junior Rollers is run by ILWR, and our adult skaters train these young athletes. Junior skaters, boys and girls, ages 8-17, learn powerful skating skills, build fitness, make new friends, and enjoy a fun, confidence-building team experience in a supervised, competitive league structure. Some of these youngsters have been with our program since it was founded in 2010, and we have been lucky enough to watch their progression. Please join us in cheering on our junior rollers!
Our Junior skaters are classified into three experience levels. The Title IX’s feature level three, the most experienced skaters, who compete by the same rules as the adult teams. The level two skaters on the Seneca Dolls are not allowed to accelerate into a hit on an opposing player.
Junior derby leagues are springing up across the country. Junior roller derby is a contact sport, our juniors follow Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) rules, a modified version of Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules. All players are required to wear protective gear: a mouth guard, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards, and a helmet. Dues are charged to defray costs. ILWR conducts fundraising to ensure that all interested junior skaters, regardless of their financial resources or athletic experience, can roll with ILJR.
What are the session dates and times? How much does it cost?
ILWR runs several sessions throughout the year in approximately 12-week blocks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00- 7:30 pm. See our current session information here. Generally our sessions are $90 and mandatory accident insurance is $35.
What gear do I need?
All participants are required to wear all of the following protective gear:
- Elbow pads
- 4 wheel (quad) roller skates
What else should I bring? What should I wear?
Bring a big water bottle. We don’t have a water fountain but there are sink bathrooms where you can refill your bottle. You should also come dressed in layers as the climate control at the practice space is unpredictable. Also come dressed to work out – no tight jeans, short skirts or anything that restricts movement. Tip – pants, shorts or tights that cover your thighs are perfect as they will protect from rink rash when practicing falls and slides. Wear athletic sneakers for off-skates land drills and warm-ups.

Can my boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad, or pet ferret watch?
Please keep your ferrets, friends and significant others at home. However, parents are invited to stay for class to quietly observe.
