History

Our league membership represents a cross-section of men and women from Ithaca and greater Southern Tier region. ILWR had their first home game in Ithaca in May 2008.

The founding league members formed a local team after joining and practicing with the Assault City Roller Derby League of Syracuse in the fall of 2007. The Ithaca League of Women Rollers is skater-owned and skater-operated, with the help of many, many devoted volunteers.

Community Giving

Since 2008 the Ithaca League of Women Rollers has given over $5000 to the following organizations:

Ithaca Skate Park
The Advocacy Center
Family Reading Partnership
Light in Winter
Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation
Ithaca Foodnet Meals on Wheels
RIBS

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters

The members of ILWR frequently make appearances, conduct skating demonstrations, and give presentations on Women’s History. Since 2008 they’ve given their time to: GIAC Senior Citizens Program, GIAC Youth After School Program, Ithaca Festival, YMCA, various local schools and the Ithaca Youth Bureau.

From Steve Griffith, President of Ithaca Foodnet Meals on Wheels: “What a great Wheel-a-thon and Roller Derby! We all had fun partnering with the SufferJets. We are proud to be associated with such lively and popular team, and we can’t overemphasize the value of the publicity that comes from an event like this. Building awareness of meals on wheels means that more people will know where to turn when they need help, and more people will donate and find ways to build the capacity of Foodnet to serve those in need.”
